Report-Discussion on Overcoming Gender Discrimination

A report-discussion titled “Overcoming Gender Discrimination” was held at Gyumri State Vocational School No. 4, led by Social Studies lecturer S. Avetisyan.

Ms. Avetisyan presented the essence of gender discrimination as a behavior that gives preference to one gender over another, negatively impacting the healthy development of society. She emphasized that the lack of awareness about discrimination stems from low legal culture in society. In some countries, it is still legally enshrined as “explicit discrimination,” while in others it is prohibited by the Constitution, yet continues to exist in “hidden or indirect” forms.

Students showed great interest in learning that gender-based discrimination is prohibited by the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia. The lecturer also introduced legislative measures aimed at eliminating discriminatory laws, sub-legislative acts, customs, and practices—especially those targeting women.

Ms. Avetisyan stressed that the education system must play an active role in overcoming gender discrimination. Effective efforts will enrich students’ knowledge, shape a rejection-based attitude, and ultimately foster a generation free from gender discrimination.

The report concluded with a thematic questionnaire, which students enthusiastically participated in. Through impartial voting, they revealed both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of gender discrimination, deepening their understanding of the topic.

The report-discussion fully achieved its goal: students absorbed the presented material, and the event became an educational catalyst for gender equality. Nevertheless, overcoming this deeply rooted societal issue requires continuous and systematic efforts.
